3 Calming Tools for Kids After School (That Actually Work for Meltdowns)

If your child melts down the second they get home from school…
you’re not alone.

After a full day of:

  • sitting still

  • following directions

  • managing emotions

their nervous system is overloaded.

So when they get home?

It all comes out.

The good news:
Your child isn’t being “difficult.”
They just don’t have the tools yet.

Here are 3 calming strategies that actually help kids regulate after school.

1. Balloon Breathing

This is one of the simplest (and most effective) tools we teach.

Have your child:

  • put their hands on their belly

  • slowly inhale like they’re filling a balloon

  • slowly exhale to “deflate”

💡 Why it works:
Deep breathing helps shift the body out of “fight or flight” and into a calmer state.

2. Wall Pushes

Kids don’t just need calm—they need to release energy first.

Try this:

  • hands on the wall

  • push as hard as they can for 10–15 seconds

  • repeat 2–3 times

💡 Why it works:
This gives their body an outlet for built-up tension.

3. The Burrito Wrap

This one is a favorite in our classes.

Wrap your child snug in a blanket like a burrito.

💡 Why it works:
Deep pressure helps the nervous system feel safe and regulated.

THE SHIFT MOST PARENTS MISS

Meltdowns after school aren’t about behavior.
They’re about regulation.

Instead of:
❌ “Just calm down”
❌ “Use your listening ears”

Kids need:
✔ tools
✔ practice
✔ support

HOW WE TEACH THIS (soft sell)

This is exactly what we focus on inside my
Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Classes in New Brighton, Minnesota.

Each week, kids learn:

  • calming breathing techniques

  • movement-based regulation tools

  • confidence-building strategies

So they don’t just hear “calm down”…
they actually know how.

If your child struggles to calm down after school,
I’d love to support them! ❤️
